Manicuring

This course of study is 400 hours, and includes all phases of manicuring, as well as the study of and application of artificial and sculptured nails. The course includes history, contemporary methods, techniques, and products and chemicals used by the manicurist/nail technician in salon services.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student will have met the Missouri State Board requirements to take the examination for a license to practice the art of manicuring and will have:

  •  The ability to perform manicure and pedicure services in a professional salon;

  •  The ability to use professional chemical products correctly for the safety of the consumer;

  •  Knowledge of basic salon business, professional ethics, and state law.

 

​Instructional Materials

A combination of audio-visual, classroom demonstrations, participation sessions, lectures, product guest artists, and supervised clinic experiences are used throughout training.

 

​Content of Instruction

Introduction to manicuring: 70 clock hours
Professional ethics: 30 clock hours
Sanitation, Sterilization, Bacteriology: 50 clock hours
Artificial and sculptured nails: 70 clock hours
Diseases and disorders of the nail & skin: 30 clock hours
Anatomy & Physiology: 20 clock hours
Basic salon business: 40 clock hours
Missouri state law: 20 clock hours
Basic chemistry: 40 clock hours
Review and written/practical examination: 30 clock hours

Merrell University students learn by observing demonstrations, audio-visual aids, attending lectures on a wide range of subjects and with actual hands-on practical techniques. Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired the technical abilities and academic theories that meet the requirements of the Missouri State Board of Cosmetology. After obtaining licensure, Merrell University offers assistance with job placement in an entry-level position. Classes are held Wednesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch period.
